The Square Tower, Old Portsmouth

22/9/2012

Picture
The Square Tower, Old Portsmouth, is the venue for  'Crafts in the Tower' which takes place on the fourth Sunday of the month.  This wonderful building was built in 1494 during the reign of Henry VII as part of the naval fortifications to protect the rapidly expanding naval port and as the home of the Governor of Portsmouth.  It has since had a varied history and has been used as a semaphore signalling tower, a provisions store for the Royal Navy and a gun powder store.  The Tower was restored to its present condition between 1979 and 1986.

Just finished final preparations for 'Crafts in the Tower' tomorrow.  Cherie Lubbock with her beautiful glass will be back after her holiday last month and water colour artist, Barbara Jones (http://www.barbsart56.co.uk/) will be joining us for the first time at the Square Tower.  As usual there will be a great variety of high quality art and crafts including ceramics, textiles, jewellery, wood turning and fine art.  The tea room will also be open so whatever the weather, it's a great opportunity to visit the Square Tower, meet the artists and see some high quality art and crafts.
